Detroit Tigers Sign 8-Year Veteran Catcher

The Detroit Tigers have signed veteran catcher Tomás Nido to a minor league contract, assigning him to Triple-A Toledo.

This move comes after journeyman catcher Anthony Bemboom suffered concussion-like symptoms following a foul ball, making it unlikely he will return this season.

Nido, who brings eight years of MLB experience with the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs, offers the Tigers a defensively sound option as they prepare for the final stretch of the season.

Though Nido has struggled offensively, batting just .192 over 49 games in 2024, his defensive skills remain a strong asset.

He boasts a 23% caught-stealing rate, above the league average, and is well-regarded for his framing and pitch-blocking abilities.

With the Tigers having traded Carson Kelly earlier in the season and current catchers Jake Rogers and rookie Dillon Dingler underperforming at the plate, Nido's reliable defense provides insurance.

While Nido won't be eligible for postseason play due to the late-season signing, his experience adds depth in case of injury.

For now, Nido will fill in at Triple-A Toledo, but he could see a call-up should the Tigers face any setbacks behind the plate.
