Herget had a standout 2022 season with the Los Angeles Angels, where he posted a 2.48 ERA across 69 innings, showcasing his ability to be an effective bullpen piece.
His quirky delivery, low arm slot, and minimal extension—comparable to a mirrored version of Chris Sale's mechanics—have made him a favorite among pitching analysts.
With one minor league option remaining, the Cubs can evaluate Herget's potential impact for the long term, possibly considering him for a future bullpen role or determining his value as an offseason signing.
Jimmy Herget was claimed by the Cubs today. He joins Tyson Miller and Gavin Hollowell as pitchers they’ve acquired who throw from low slot on the right side and are extension outliers (Herget 1st%, Miller 97th%, Hollowell 87th%)

In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled outfielder Brennen Davis from Triple-A Iowa and placed him on the 60-day injured list due to a fractured ankle.
Though Davis won’t play this season, this procedural move opened a spot on the 40-man roster for Herget.
