Cleveland Guardians DFA Longtime Consistent Reliever

The Cleveland Guardians have designated right-hander Scott Barlow for assignment, as they fight to stay competitive in the AL Central.

Barlow, 31, was acquired from the San Diego Padres last offseason to solidify a key setup role, following his impressive performances with the Kansas City Royals.

Initially, Barlow met expectations with a 3.12 ERA through the end of July, but his form deteriorated significantly in August, posting a 7.43 ERA over his last 15 appearances.

His recent struggles, including giving up 12 hits in 13.1 innings and inconsistent command, forced the Guardians to make a tough decision as they look for more reliable relief options down the stretch.

Barlow's overall 2024 season numbers reflect the inconsistency that plagued him in Cleveland.

Across 63 appearances, he recorded a 4.25 ERA, but his inability to maintain strong performances during critical moments of the season led to his removal.

The Guardians, who are battling for playoff positioning, could no longer afford to rely on Barlow after multiple outings where he gave up crucial runs.

To fill Barlow's spot, the Guardians have recalled left-hander Anthony Gose.

Gose, a converted outfielder, returned from Tommy John surgery earlier this season and has shown promise in Triple-A with a 3.27 ERA.

While his major league appearances this year have been limited, Cleveland hopes Gose can provide a fresh arm and help stabilize the bullpen in the final weeks of the season.
