Cavan Biggio Joins 4th Team This Season

After spending the first five-and-a-half years of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays, Cavan Biggio has now landed with his fourth team in the last three months.

The Atlanta Braves have traded for Biggio from the San Francisco Giants, who only had him in their organization for two weeks after being released by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was traded to LA from Toronto in early June.

Biggio spent 12 games with the Giants at their Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento, where he slashed a paltry .163/.413/.326 with two home runs and six RBIs. His overall slash mark in the majors this season in 74 games is a similarly woeful .197/.316/.306 with an OPS of .622.

Infielder/outfielder Whit Merrifield suffered a fractured foot Friday night, and with the injury-riddled Atlanta infield also missing Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley, Biggio should get a chance to plug some holes.

Biggio was a 5th-round selection by the Blue Jays in the 2016 Draft, and came in to the organization with high hopes (and a Hall of Fame father). He finished 5th in balloting for the American League Rookie of the Year in 2019 after posting an OPS+ of 113 and bettered that in the shortened 2020 campaign with a 122 OPS+. But he has been a well below-average hitter since then.

He's been able to maintain a spot in the majors based on his super-utility status, able to play just about any position on the diamond.
