Baltimore Orioles Release 9x All-Star

The Baltimore Orioles have officially released veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel after designating him for assignment last week.

Kimbrel, signed to a one-year, $12 million deal in December, was initially brought in to help fill the void left by All-Star closer Félix Bautista.

He performed well in the first half of the season, posting a 2.10 ERA with 23 saves, but struggled significantly after the All-Star break, ending his stint with Baltimore with a 5.33 ERA over 57 appearances.

The final straw came after a string of poor outings, including an 11.50 ERA in his last 19 games.

"We have so much respect for Craig and his career," said manager Brandon Hyde. "It’s never easy to say goodbye to someone who’s done so much, but we felt it was the right move for the team."

In addition to releasing Kimbrel, the Orioles reinstated first baseman Ryan Mountcastle from the 10-day injured list.

Mountcastle, who had been sidelined since late August with a left wrist sprain, is expected to provide a much-needed boost to Baltimore’s lineup as they push for a deep postseason run.

Before his injury, Mountcastle slashed .265/.305/.425 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs in 118 games.

Hyde expressed his excitement about Mountcastle's return, stating, "We’re excited to have Mounty back. He adds another really good right-handed hitter for us, a guy that has the ability to hit for power as well as being a good hitter."
