Baltimore Orioles Release 2x All-Star Infielder

The Baltimore Orioles have released former All-Star infielder Jean Segura, who had signed a minor league deal with the team on August 9 in hopes of adding infield depth.

Segura, 34, struggled during his brief stint with Triple-A Norfolk, posting a disappointing .137/.250/.196 slash line over 14 games.

Despite being brought in as a potential backup option amidst injuries to key infielders Jordan Westburg and Jorge Mateo, Segura was unable to generate the momentum needed for a September call-up, leading to his request for release.

Segura’s time with the Orioles marked his first game action since July 2023, when he last played for the Miami Marlins.

After being traded to the Cleveland Guardians as part of a deal that brought Josh Bell to Miami, Segura was immediately released and spent the remainder of the year out of professional baseball.

His attempt to revive his career with Baltimore didn’t pan out, and his struggles in Norfolk mirrored the difficulties he faced during the 2023 season in Miami, where he managed a .556 OPS over 85 games.

Over 12 MLB seasons, he was twice named an All-Star and played a key role in the Philadelphia Phillies' 2022 World Series run.

With a career batting average of .281 and 211 stolen bases, Segura has been a reliable and versatile presence in the majors. However, with his recent release from the Orioles and declining performance, it remains uncertain whether he will seek another opportunity in professional baseball or consider retirement.
