Athletics Claim Infielder Off Waivers Who Tore Up Triple-A This Season

The Oakland Athletics have claimed infielder CJ Alexander off waivers from the Kansas City Royals and assigned him to their Triple-A affiliate, the Las Vegas Aviators.

The 28-year-old made his MLB debut earlier this season with the Royals, appearing in just eight games, but has been a standout at the Triple-A level, hitting .306 with 17 home runs over 83 games in 2024.

Known for his power-hitting and defensive versatility, Alexander can play all four corner positions, making him an intriguing depth addition for the Athletics as they continue to restructure their roster.

Originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2018, Alexander struggled during his 2019 season in Double-A, but he rebounded in 2022 with 25 home runs and a .264 average, followed by another strong campaign in 2023 for the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate, Omaha.

His resurgence in 2024, with improved average and power, reinforces his potential as a valuable asset, especially as the Athletics look for flexible players who can contribute both offensively and defensively.

For the A’s, claiming Alexander presents a low-risk, high-reward scenario. With two option years remaining beyond 2024, the Athletics are in no rush to promote him to the major league roster, but his performance in Las Vegas could position him for another opportunity in the big leagues.
