Anthony Rendon Goes On IL for 12th Time as an Angel

It should go down as one of the worst contracts in baseball history. Ever since signing his massive 7-year, $245 million deal in 2019, Anthony Rendon has spent twice as much time on the injured list than on the field for the Los Angeles Angels.

Today, they placed him on the IL for the 3rd time this season, and 12th time since signing that albatross of a contract. This time, it's an oblique strain, which, with just three weeks left in the regular season, probably ends his 2024. He also missed 68 games earlier this year with a strained hamstring and another eight games with lower back inflammation.

Rendon has now missed well over 100 games in each of his four full seasons in LA (2020 was the shortened season). Here's how it breaks down:

  • 257 games played
  • 451 games missed

Some of his other injuries have included:
  • hip impingement
  • strained groin
  • strained hamstring
  • knee contusion
  • wrist surgery
  • leg issues

And even when he has played, it's been a sad sight for Angels fans. Rendon is batting .218 with no home runs in 206 at-bats this season, and overall, has just 22 home runs for the team in five seasons, after hitting 34 in his last season alone in Washington in 2019, leading to that insane contract. He still has three years and $114 million owing.

In his seven years with the Nationals, he had an .859 OPS with a .290 average and 158 homers, while he's batting .242 with a .717 OPS and 22 HR with the Angels.
