Anthony Gose DFA'd for 4th Time in a Month

To say it's been a rollercoaster ride this season for pitcher Anthony Gose would be an understatement. He's now been designated for assignment by the Cleveland Guardians for the 4th time in the past month, and has been the subject of 13 transactions within that period.

Here's how things have gone down for the former outfielder-turned-pitcher, from the Cleveland Guardians transactions page, between his role on a minor league contract with the Triple-A Columbus Clippers and the Guardians—just within the last 30 days:

  • Aug. 6: Cleveland Guardians selected the contract of CF Anthony Gose from Columbus Clippers
  • Aug. 9: Cleveland Guardians designated CF Anthony Gose for assignment
  • Aug. 13: Cleveland Guardians sent CF Anthony Gose outright to Columbus Clippers
  • Aug. 19: Cleveland Guardians selected the contract of CF Anthony Gose from Columbus Clippers
  • Aug. 21: Cleveland Guardians designated CF Anthony Gose for assignment
  • Aug. 23: Cleveland Guardians sent CF Anthony Gose outright to Columbus Clippers
  • Aug. 24: Cleveland Guardians signed free agent CF Anthony Gose to a minor league contract
  • Aug. 27: Cleveland Guardians selected the contract of CF Anthony Gose from Columbus Clippers
  • Aug. 28: Cleveland Guardians designated CF Anthony Gose for assignment
  • Aug. 30: Cleveland Guardians sent CF Anthony Gose outright to Columbus Clippers
  • Aug. 31: Cleveland Guardians signed free agent CF Anthony Gose to a minor league contract
  • Sept. 8: Cleveland Guardians selected the contract of LHP Anthony Gose from Columbus Clippers
  • Sept. 9: Cleveland Guardians designated LHP Anthony Gose for assignment

Four DFAs, two new minor league contracts signed (and likely a third to come), and a dizzying amount of moves.

After the first DFA, he was back in Cleveland 10 days later, but only two days after that, he was DFA'd for the second time. He re-signed a deal three days after that, and was called up three days later. But just 24 hours later, he was DFA'd for the third time. He re-signed again 72 hours after that, and following his latest call-up on Sunday, he was once again DFA'd on Monday after just one day.

Through all of that, Gose has pitched just 4.1 innings with Cleveland, and not too surprisingly, given his tumultuous month, has surrendered nine hits and five earned runs for a 10.38 ERA. In the minors, he's fared much better, with a 3.27 ERA in 41 innings, while striking out 12.6 batters per nine innings.

Gose is coming back this season from Tommy John surgery in September of 2022, causing him miss the entire 2023 season.
