4-Time All-Star Charlie Blackmon Makes Big Decision About His Rockies Future

He's been a top 5 MVP candidate, a four-time All-Star, a batting title champion, a two-time Silver Slugger, and a 14-year staple in the Colorado Rockies outfield. Now, at the age of 38, Charlie Blackmon has decided his time has come, and he is retiring from baseball.

Blackmon wrote his goodbye to the game in an Instagram Post:

“As a kid you play the game because you love it, like nothing else matters. I still play the game that way, but I don’t feel like a kid anymore. My perspective has changed. I have been blessed to call the city of Denver and the Colorado Rockies my baseball home for the entirety of my career. I am grateful for the support of this organization, my teammates, and most of all Rockies fans. It is with a thankful heart and a career’s worth of memories that I choose a new path.”

With six home games at Coors Field still to play, Blackmon sports career numbers of a .292 average, an .831 OPS, 226 home runs, 797 RBIs, 991 runs and an OPS+ of 111.

Like most players with the Rockies, he certainly benefited from the thin air of Coors, as his home/road splits throughout his career looked like this:

Home                    Road

796        Games    822

.329        Avg        .256

133        HR            93

477        RBIs        320

His marquee year was 2017, when he won the batting title with a .331 average, while adding 37 homers and 104 RBIs. He also led the majors in hits (213), runs (137), triples (14) and total bases (387). All of that earned him a 5th place finish in balloting for NL MVP.

Blackmon will be remembered as an All-Time Rockie.

“When Charlie told me of his plans to retire I got a little emotional, as I’m sure many fans will when they see the news that one of the greatest Rockies of all-time will no longer take the field,” Rockies owner Dick Monfort said in a statement. ”Charlie’s passion and dedication to the game of baseball, this organization and our great fans was on display every single day and I can’t thank him enough for pouring his heart into every game and every at-bat over the course of his 14 years here. Charlie is a Rockie to his core.”
