2023 NL Manager Of The Year Steps Down After Two Seasons With Marlins

Skip Schumaker has officially stepped down as the Miami Marlins' manager after two seasons, citing a family health matter as the immediate reason for his departure.

The decision was announced following the Marlins' 15-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, with Schumaker informing players of his choice to miss the final two games of the season.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Schumaker's exit had been expected for months, with frustration over the organization's direction, particularly after the departure of general manager Kim Ng, contributing to his decision.

Earlier this season, Schumaker had his 2025 club option removed, signaling his potential departure from the team.

Schumaker’s tenure with the Marlins was a tale of two seasons.

In 2023, he led Miami to an 84-78 record and a surprising playoff berth, earning National League Manager of the Year honors.

However, the 2024 campaign took a drastic turn for the worse, with the Marlins finishing 60-100, the second-worst record in Major League Baseball. Injuries and key midseason trades, including those of Luis Arraez and Jazz Chisholm Jr., depleted the roster, making it difficult for the team to replicate their previous success.

Despite this, Schumaker remained highly respected, with Passan noting, "Schumaker’s work in 2023 earned him ample praise," and positioning him as a strong candidate for managerial openings elsewhere.

As the Marlins move forward under new president of baseball operations Peter Bendix, they now face the task of finding a new manager.

Meanwhile, Schumaker is expected to be in high demand, with early reports linking him to the Cincinnati Reds.
