San Diego Padres Sign All-Star MVP

The San Diego Padres have strengthened their catching depth by signing former All-Star MVP Elias Díaz to a minor league contract.

Released by the Colorado Rockies on August 16, the 33-year-old catcher brings valuable experience, defensive prowess, and solid game management skills to a Padres team gearing up for a potential playoff run.

Díaz made headlines in 2023 when he hit a game-winning two-run homer in the All-Star Game, securing a 3-2 victory for the National League and earning MVP honors.

This season, he batted .270 with five home runs and 36 RBIs over 84 games for Colorado.

Díaz’s addition provides the Padres with a potential upgrade over their current catching tandem of Kyle Higashioka and Luis Campusano.

While Higashioka, who was acquired in the Juan Soto trade, has shown more offensive productivity, Campusano has struggled both at the plate and behind it.

Díaz’s strong defensive metrics and reputation for handling pitchers well could make him a crucial asset, especially as the Padres aim to solidify their roster ahead of a critical postseason push.

His signing before the September 1 postseason eligibility deadline ensures that Díaz could be a valuable contributor if the Padres make the playoffs.

Before agreeing to join San Diego, Díaz reportedly turned down an offer from the San Francisco Giants due to concerns about his roster stability once their starting catcher, Patrick Bailey, returns from injury.

By choosing the Padres, Díaz not only secures a more stable opportunity but also positions himself to be a key depth piece for a team with serious playoff aspirations.
