Report: One Team Had "Heavy Interest" In Brett Baty at Trade Deadline

With Mark Vientos turning into a slugging star at third base for the New York Mets over the past couple of months, it appeared inevitable that former top 3B prospect Bretty Baty would be on his way out at the trade deadline. And we're learning now of one active team at the deadline that had "heavy interest" in Baty.

Per Mike Puma of the New York Post:

Baty, according to sources, was sought by other teams before the trade deadline.

The (Miami) Marlins were a team that showed heavy interest, but the Mets were never close to trading the former first-round pick.

Who the Mets were interested in on the Marlins' roster is unknown, but the Fish engaged in a number of deals, shipping out the likes of outfielders Jazz Chisholm and Bryan De La Cruz, relievers Tanner ScottA.J. Puk, RHP Huascar Brazoban, RHP JT Chargois, and RHP Bryan Hoeing, along with starting pitcher Trevor Rogers and 1B/DH Josh Bell

As for Baty, the Mets say they still have faith in him, and in 46 games at Triple-A Syracuse, he has slashed .260/.360/.497 for an .857 OPS, along with 11 homers and an incredible 43 RBIs in those 46 contests.

Vientos, however, has kept Baty at bay, as his numbers up with the big club are far better: A .280/.336/.547 slash line with 16 homers and 42 RBIs in 64 games with the Mets.

Meanwhile, Baty, a former first-round pick, continues to try to fight his way back, and he's even picked up some positional versatility while at Syracuse, playing a number of games at second base as well.
