Pitcher Gets DFA’d For 3rd Time This Month

He began his major league career as a speedy, elite outfield prospect. But now as a pitcher, he is endeavoring to come back from Tommy John surgery, and has now had to endure his third DFA this month.

Anthony Gose has been designated for assignment by the Cleveland Guardians yet again, just one day after being called-up from Triple-A.  Earlier this month after his second DFA, he elected free agency only to re-sign with Cleveland on a minor league deal.

In 39 innings with Columbus at AAA, he's pitched fairly well, with a 3.46 ERA, while mowing down hitters at a 12.7 per nine innings pace. But he's also issued a grossly high 5.8 walks per nine.

Gose missed the entire 2023 season due to TJ surgery and also sat out the 2020 season. Overall, he's only pitched 31 innings at the major league level since making the switch to the mound in 2017. He carries a 4.35 ERA with 11.3 K/9.

If he clears waivers, he can once again reject an outright assignment to the minors and become a free agent, at which point he would likely repeat the whole process all over again and re-sign with Cleveland.

In his previous life as a hitter in the majors, from 2012-2016 with the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers, Gose batted .240 with a .656 OPS along with 57 stolen bases. His switch to the mound wasn't out of nowhere, as he was a two-way star in high school.
