New York Yankees DFA Veteran Pitcher Despite Solid Numbers

The New York Yankees have designated right-hander Michael Tonkin for assignment.

Tonkin, who had been a dependable middle-relief option since being claimed off waivers from the New York Mets in April, posted a 3.38 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 56 innings over 39 appearances this season.

However, his recent struggles, including a 9.39 ERA in his last 7.2 innings, contributed to the decision. Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the difficulty of the move, praising Tonkin for his performance and being a great teammate.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees selected the contract of right-handed reliever Phil Bickford from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Bickford, 29, had a rough first stint with the Yankees earlier this season, allowing eight earned runs in five innings, but he impressed in Triple-A with a 3.00 ERA over 45 innings.

Boone explained that the decision to bring back Bickford was influenced by the need for a fresher arm in the bullpen, particularly after a taxing series of games that left several relievers unavailable.

Tonkin, 34, has experienced a tumultuous season, being designated for assignment four times and moving between the New York Mets, Minnesota Twins, and Yankees.

Despite his strong early-season performance with the Yankees, his recent decline, including multiple outings where he allowed crucial runs, ultimately led to the decision to DFA him.

The Yankees now have seven days to trade, release, or outright Tonkin to the minors, though he may elect free agency if he clears waivers, forfeiting the remainder of his guaranteed salary.
