New York Mets DFA 9-Year Veteran Outfielder

The New York Mets have designated veteran outfielder Ben Gamel for assignment to make room for the return of Starling Marte, who was activated from the 10-day injured list after nearly two months sidelined with a bone bruise in his right knee.

Marte's return is a significant boost for the Mets as they push toward the postseason, adding depth to an already crowded outfield that includes Brandon Nimmo, Harrison Bader, and Jesse Winker.

Before his injury, Marte was a solid contributor, slashing .278/.328/.416 with seven home runs and 12 stolen bases in 66 games, making his return highly anticipated.

Gamel, 32, who has played in parts of nine MLB seasons, found himself the odd man out in this roster shuffle.

In his limited role with the Mets this season, Gamel appeared in just 18 games and posted a .217/.400/.261 line.

However, he was highly productive in Triple-A, maintaining a .314/.423/.539 slash line with Syracuse. Despite his minimal impact at the major league level, Gamel's strong performance in the minors could attract interest from other teams as he goes through the waiver process.

If he clears waivers, he may choose to remain with the Mets as non-roster depth or explore free agency for new opportunities.
