MLB Trade Rumors: Will The Marlins Trade Sandy Alcantara?

The Miami Marlins have made it clear that they have no plans to trade their ace, Sandy Alcantara, this offseason, despite being in the midst of a significant rebuild.

Alcantara, who won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss the entire 2024 season.

However, his affordable contract, which runs through 2026 with a club option for 2027, and his status as one of the best pitchers in baseball when healthy, make him a cornerstone for the Marlins' future.

Even as the team has traded away key players like Jazz Chisholm Jr., Luis Arráez, and Tanner Scott, they appear committed to retaining Alcantara, betting on his return to form in 2025.

While Alcantara's 2023 season was less impressive, with a 4.14 ERA in 28 starts, the Marlins recognize his potential to once again be a dominant force in their rotation.

His 2022 campaign, where he posted a 2.28 ERA and led the majors with 228.1 innings pitched, remains a strong reminder of what he can bring to the table when healthy.

The Marlins view Alcantara as a key piece in their long-term plans, particularly as they look to build a competitive roster around a young and promising rotation that includes talents like Eury Perez and Jesus Luzardo.

However, the Marlins' stance could change depending on the team's performance and Alcantara's recovery over the next couple of seasons.

If Alcantara returns strong in 2025 and the Marlins continue to struggle, the organization might reconsider his trade value, especially if other teams express significant interest.

For now, though, Miami seems intent on holding onto Alcantara, hoping he can once again anchor their rotation as they aim to rebuild into a contender.
