Marlins Claim RHP Off Waivers, Marking His 5th Team In 2024

The Miami Marlins have claimed right-handed pitcher Mike Baumann off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels, marking his fifth team in the 2024 season.

Baumann, 28, has had a whirlwind year, appearing with the Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, and BaltimoreOrioles before landing with the Marlins.

With just one appearance for Miami, Baumann could join Oliver Drake as one of the few players in MLB history to play for five different teams in a single season.

This move represents Baumann’s first waiver claim of the season, as his previous designations for assignment were resolved through trades.

Originally drafted by the Orioles in the third round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Baumann spent his entire career in Baltimore's organization until being designated for assignment in May 2024.

Despite a solid 2023 season with the Orioles, where he posted a 3.76 ERA over 60 appearances, Baumann has struggled to find consistency this year, recording a 5.24 ERA over 44.2 innings across multiple teams.

Known for his hard-throwing arm, with a fastball velocity in the mid-90s, Baumann's potential has kept him in demand, leading to multiple transactions as teams sought to add depth to their rosters.

For the Marlins, who are dealing with numerous pitching injuries amidst a rebuilding phase, Baumann presents a low-risk, high-upside opportunity to bolster their staff.

With no minor league options remaining, Baumann is expected to be added to Miami's 26-man active roster, where he will have a chance to contribute immediately and potentially secure a more permanent role with the team.
