Insider Names Frontrunner For Pete Alonso in Free Agency (& 2 Other Finalists)

The New York Mets were certainly in no position to trade Pete Alonso at the deadline, not while they're in possession of a postseason berth, currently the third Wild Card spot in the NL.

But as the slugger plays out his contract and is set to become a free agent at season's end, there are still some who wonder if we're seeing Alonso's final two months in Queens.

Although Polar Bear has embraced his time with the Mets and the fanbase with him, it's fair to take a look at his potential landing spots in free agency, as the time is getting ever closer.

Insider Jon Heyman has noted three teams that would be serious fits for Alonso if he leaves New York (and even one other fun option).

Chicago Cubs

"I might not best against" the Cubs, says Heyman, noting the team has been desperate for some time now for a true slugger. And while Michael Busch is having a good run and has taken the first base job, Alonso would be a mighty good fit at Wrigley.

Houston Astros

First base has been a disaster for the Astros this season, and they even had to eat the $30 million left on that ill-advised contract they signed Jose Abreu to before the 2023 season. Alonso would be a huge get for the Astros, and they will undoubtedly make a push.

Seattle Mariners

Another team that has struggled at first base this season. They waived Ty France last month, and traded for 39-year-old Justin Turner from the Toronto Blue Jays. He's hitting .200 in his eight games in Seattle, and is obviously not a solution for the future. They will make a run at Alonso.

And then there's one more team that Heyman mentioned, and while we doubt that Alsonso would go to the Colorado Rockies, who are years away from contention, just thinking about Big Pete crushing moon shots in the thin air at Coors Field is a fun thought.
