Insider: 2 World Series Contenders Made "Attractive" Offers for Garrett Crochet in Final Hours

It was apparent that Chicago White Sox prized ace starter Garrett Crochet threw a wrench into the team's trade talks surrounding him after he went public with a demand for a contract extension to pitch in the playoffs from any team that traded for him.

Yet, a new report from insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic says that both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers made late offers in the final hours before the trade deadline that the White Sox considered "attractive."

For the Dodgers, they had made their No. 3 overall prospect River Ryan available in a potential trade, but the Pale Hose had concerns about arm troubles the young prospect was having, and it turns out they were right to be concerned, as he is now scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers, in the meantime, pivoted at the last minute to a trade with the Detroit Tigers for Jack Flaherty.

The Phillies, for their part, refused to include their No. 2 prospect, right-handed starter Andrew Painter, who underwent his own Tommy John surgery in July 2023. He should be ready to return in 2025.

So Crochet remains a White Sox pitcher for now, though Rosenthal writes that he will be back on the trade block and "almost certainly will be in high demand again this winter".

Crochet has had a massive breakthrough in his first full season in the majors, with a 3.61 ERA in a league-leading 25 starts with a major league-best 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings. And as Rosenthal notes, he has an expected ERA in the 93rd percentile, and a strikeout rate in the 97th percentile.
