Houston Astros Sign 3-Year Veteran Starting Pitcher

The Houston Astros have strengthened their pitching depth by signing right-hander Glenn Otto to a minor league contract.

Otto, a Rice University product, was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the fifth round of the 2017 MLB Draft and later traded to the Texas Rangers as part of the Joey Gallo deal.

He made his MLB debut with the Rangers in 2021 and became a regular in their starting rotation the following season. During his first full year in the majors, Otto started 27 games, posting a 4.64 ERA over 135.2 innings, showing potential as a reliable rotation option.

However, Otto's career has been hampered by persistent shoulder injuries, which began with a strain during 2023 spring training.

That injury limited him to just six relief appearances that year, during which he struggled, allowing 12 runs over 10.2 innings.

After being designated for assignment by the Rangers following the trade deadline, Otto was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres.

Unfortunately, his 2024 season was also plagued by injury, as a strained teres major muscle in his shoulder led to multiple stints on the injured list. He made only eight appearances in Triple-A before being released by the Padres in late July to make room for another acquisition.

Now with the Astros, Otto joins his hometown team while still recovering from his latest injury. Despite his current health status, the Astros see potential value in Otto, particularly as a multi-inning relief option or spot starter later in the season.
