Houston Astros DFA Highly-Paid Pitcher

The Houston Astros have designated relief pitcher Rafael Montero for assignment, marking a significant move in their efforts to reshape the roster amid a challenging season.

Montero, in the second year of a three-year, $34.5 million contract, struggled to replicate his stellar 2022 performance.

This season, he posted a 4.70 ERA across 41 appearances with a 23:19 K/BB ratio over 38.1 innings.

The decision to DFA Montero clears space for newly acquired pitchers Yusei Kikuchi and Caleb Ferguson and comes alongside the optioning of Seth Martinez to Triple-A Sugar Land.

Montero's designation reflects the aftermath of the Astros' tumultuous 2022-23 offseason, during which owner Jim Crane parted ways with general manager James Click and temporarily operated without a GM.

Montero, along with first baseman José Abreu, who was released in June despite being in the second year of a high-priced deal, were significant signings made during Crane's interim management period.

Both moves have since been criticized for their lack of long-term vision, as Montero allowed 58 earned runs over 105.2 innings in the past two seasons, falling short of expectations set by his previous success.

Under current GM Dana Brown, who took over in January 2023, the Astros are making adjustments to bolster their postseason push.

The willingness to absorb the financial burdens of Montero's and Abreu's contracts reflects a shift towards correcting course and addressing immediate roster needs.
