Dodgers Place 15-Year Veteran Outfielder On Waivers

The Los Angeles Dodgers have designated veteran outfielder Jason Heyward for assignment, making room on the roster for utilityman Chris Taylor, who was activated from the injured list.

Heyward, who joined the Dodgers in 2023 after being released by the Chicago Cubs, experienced a resurgence last season, batting .269 with 15 home runs.

However, the 35-year-old outfielder struggled this year, hitting just .208 with six home runs and a .682 OPS over 63 games, while injuries and inconsistent playing time further limited his impact.

Despite a recent pinch-hit, go-ahead three-run homer in a win against the Seattle Mariners, Heyward's role became increasingly unclear as the Dodgers bolstered their outfield depth.

The return of Mookie Betts to right field, combined with the acquisitions of Kevin Kiermaier and Tommy Edman at the trade deadline, left Heyward without a clear position.

The Dodgers chose to prioritize players who offer greater defensive versatility and fit better into their current roster construction, such as Kiermaier, Kiké Hernández, and the returning Taylor.

Manager Dave Roberts praised Heyward's professionalism and leadership during his time with the team, acknowledging the tough decision to part ways with the respected veteran.

However, with the Dodgers now at full strength and focused on optimizing their roster for a deep playoff run, Heyward was ultimately the odd man out in a crowded outfield.
