Dodgers DFA Former Top Prospect Just 2 Months After Trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers have designated utility player Cavan Biggio for assignment to make room for the return of Freddie Freeman to the lineup.

Biggio, 29, was acquired by the Dodgers in June after being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays.

During his brief tenure with Los Angeles, Biggio struggled to find his form, hitting just .192/.306/.329 with three home runs and a .635 OPS over 30 games.

Despite his versatility, playing primarily at third base and filling in at first during Freeman's absence, his performance did not meet expectations.

Freeman's reinstatement follows a family emergency that placed him on the restricted list, during which his son was hospitalized.

The Dodgers, who already had an open 40-man roster spot, needed to free up an active roster spot for Freeman.

Biggio's designation for assignment was also influenced by the team's recent acquisitions of utility player Amed Rosario and left-handed hitter Kevin Kiermaier, as well as the anticipated return of shortstop Miguel Rojas from the injured list, which further tightened the competition for roster spots.

Biggio's departure marks another chapter in a challenging season for him.

Before joining the Dodgers, he had struggled with the Blue Jays, hitting .200 with a .592 OPS over 44 games. The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, Cavan had high expectations but has not found consistent success in the major leagues.

If unclaimed on waivers, Biggio can opt to become a free agent due to his service time, leaving his future uncertain as he seeks to revive his career with a new team.
