Diamondbacks Claim 6-Year Veteran Catcher Off Waivers

The Arizona Diamondbacks have bolstered their catching depth by claiming veteran Andrew Knizner off waivers from the Texas Rangers, assigning him to their Triple-A affiliate in Reno.

This move comes at a time as the team faces uncertainty with their starting catcher, Gabriel Moreno, who is currently on the injured list due to a groin injury.

Knizner, 29, had a challenging season with the Rangers, posting a .167/.183/.211 slash line in 93 plate appearances, but his experience and defensive skills, particularly in pitch framing, add valuable insurance for the Diamondbacks.

Knizner’s addition allows Arizona to maintain depth at the catcher position while navigating Moreno's absence.

With José Herrera stepping into the starting role and rookie Adrian Del Castillo recently called up to serve as the backup, the Diamondbacks are relying on these players to carry the load.

Knizner, who spent five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals before joining Texas, provides a veteran presence should the need arise for further reinforcement behind the plate, offering the team flexibility as they continue their playoff push.

In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks designated right-hander Luis Frías for assignment to make room for Knizner on the 40-man roster.

Frías, who has spent his entire professional career with Arizona, struggled to establish himself in the majors, posting a 9.95 ERA over 6.1 innings this season before being optioned to Triple-A.
