Cincinnati Reds Sign Former MVP Candidate

The Cincinnati Reds have signed veteran first baseman Dominic Smith, following his release from the Boston Red Sox earlier this week.

Smith, 29, had been filling in as Boston's primary first baseman during Triston Casas's injury, posting a .237/.317/.390 slash line with six home runs over 83 games.

Although his offensive production was modest, Smith was well-regarded for his solid defensive skills and was praised by Red Sox manager Alex Cora for his contributions. His release came as a result of Casas's return, which pushed Smith out of the lineup despite his steady performance.

The Reds, who are in contention for a National League wild-card spot, acted swiftly to bolster their infield depth amid a series of injuries.

With both Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jeimer Candelario on the injured list, Cincinnati needed reinforcement at first base.

Smith’s addition follows the Reds' recent acquisition of Ty France from the Seattle Mariners, and he is expected to either platoon with the right-handed France or alternate between first base and the designated hitter role. Smith’s left-handed bat and versatility provide the Reds with valuable lineup flexibility as they navigate the final stretch of the season.

In a corresponding move to accommodate Smith's signing, the Reds placed outfielder Jake Fraley on the 10-day injured list with a knee sprain and designated right-hander Brooks Kriske for assignment.

With the Reds sitting 5.5 games back in the wild-card race, Smith’s experience and ability to perform in clutch situations could play a critical role in Cincinnati’s push for a postseason berth.

Smith's biggest season came in 2020, when he placed 13th in MVP voting. That season saw him post a .316/.377/.616 triple-slash line, with 10 home runs, 42 RBIs, and 27 runs scored across 50 games played.
