Cavan Biggio Lands With 3rd Team This Season

His career never took off like his Hall of Fame father's did, and now Cavan Biggio, after being originally DFA'd back in June, finds himself on his third team in the last 2½ months.

The utilityman Biggio has signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants, after being designated for assignment by the rival Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this month. He was also DFA'd  by the Toronto Blue Jays after 5½ seasons with the club, back on June 7th.

Across 219 played appearances this season with the Jays and Dodgers, the struggling 29-year-old has a woeful .197/.316/.306 slash line.

Despite his weak .223 batting average over his six-year career, he still maintains an OPS+ right on the breakeven point as an average major leaguer, at 100. That's due to a career .341 on-base percentage, as he always has been able to draw a walk. This year has been an exception.

Biggio was a 5th-round pick in 2016 by the Blue Jays, and was expected to have a good major league career, partly due to his strong bloodlines. His father, Craig, was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015 after an impressive 20-year career.

The younger Biggio will start his Giants stint with Triple-A Sacramento, but will likely offer a left-handed bat for the Giants off the bench down the stretch.
