Blue Jays Claim Southpaw Starting Pitcher Off Waivers

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed left-handed pitcher Easton Lucas off waivers from the Detroit Tigers, adding depth to their pitching staff as they continue to work through a disappointing 2024 season. 

Lucas, 27, has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo, where he will bolster the Bisons' bullpen and serve as a potential option for the major league roster. 

While Lucas has struggled in his brief MLB career, posting a 9.22 ERA over 12 appearances with the Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers, his performance in Triple-A this season—where he recorded a 3.31 ERA across 32 outings—demonstrates his potential to contribute effectively at the minor league level.

The team recently transferred right-hander Alek Manoah to the 60-day injured list following his season-ending UCL surgery, further emphasizing the need for reliable arms. Lucas joins a growing list of pitchers added to the organization through waivers and trades, as the Blue Jays seek to stabilize their bullpen and prepare for the future.

Although Lucas may not be an immediate impact player at the major league level, his presence in Triple-A provides the Blue Jays with an additional option as they work to rebuild a more resilient and consistent pitching staff. 

Lucas was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 14th-round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
