Baltimore Orioles Sign 2-Time All-Star Infielder

Despite a full year on the sidelines, the former two-time All-Star still feels he has plenty in the tank at the age of 34, so twelve-year major league veteran infielder Jean Segura is giving it another shot, as the Baltimore Orioles have signed him to a minor league deal.

Segura last appeared in the big leagues with the Miami Marlins at the end of July of 2023, before being released. He batted just .219 in 300 at-bats with the Fish, with an OPS+ of just 50, both numbers by far his lowest marks in the majors.

The shortstop/third baseman/second baseman got an All-Star nod in 2013 with the Milwaukee Brewers, and hit over .300 for three straight seasons from 2016 through 2018, the latter of which was his second All-Star appearance, with the Seattle Mariners.

He still carries a career .281 average with 110 homers and 211 stolen bases along with a .729 OPS.

The O's currently feature the potential league MVP at shortstop, in Gunnar Henderson, while baseball's top prospect Jackson Holliday holds down second base. If Segura is able to show in a minor league stint that he's got his hitting chops back, he could perhaps take some time from Ramon Urias at 3B or even help out Eloy Jimenez at DH.
