Athletics Claim Pitcher Off Waivers From Astros

The Oakland Athletics have claimed right-hander Janson Junk off waivers from the Houston Astros, marking the second time in August that Junk has been claimed after initially being picked up by Houston from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Junk did not make an appearance in the majors for the Astros, instead pitching in Triple-A, where he struggled with a 6.14 ERA over 14.2 innings at Round Rock.

This performance was a stark contrast to his earlier success with Triple-A Nashville, where he posted a strong 2.55 ERA over 35.1 innings while with the Brewers.

Junk's experience in the minors has been marked by flashes of potential, but his success has yet to fully translate to the major league level.

Across 40 career MLB innings with the Los Angeles Angels and Milwaukee Brewers since his debut in 2021, Junk has a 5.18 ERA, along with a 20% strikeout rate and a 5% walk rate.

To make room for Junk on their roster, the Athletics moved outfielder Miguel Andújar to the 60-day injured list following his season-ending core surgery.

With Junk being out of minor league options next year, the Athletics or any future team would need to designate him for assignment before attempting to send him back to Triple-A.
