Astros Claim 9-Year Veteran Outfielder Off Waivers

The Houston Astros have added to their outfield depth by claiming veteran outfielder Ben Gamel off waivers from the New York Mets. 

Gamel, 32, was designated for assignment by the Mets after appearing in 18 games this season, where he posted a .217/.400/.261 slash line. 

Despite his limited playing time with the Mets, Gamel's strong performance at Triple-A Syracuse, where he slashed .314/.423/.538, caught the attention of the Astros.

The Astros' outfield has been hit hard by injuries, most notably to Kyle Tucker, who has been sidelined since early June with a shin injury. 

Tucker's absence, coupled with inconsistent production from other outfielders, has created a need for reliable and experienced players like Gamel. 

Known for his solid defense and ability to draw walks, evidenced by a 23.3% walk rate during his brief stint with the Mets, Gamel offers the Astros a steady veteran presence. 

Figured Astros would look at waiver wire in August for some OF help.

Ben Gamel has been dominating at the AAA level (.962 OPS this year, .900 OPS last year).

His experience across nine MLB seasons and his ability to play all three outfield positions make him a solid addition as Houston looks to solidify their lineup amid ongoing injury challenges.

To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the Astros transferred right-hander J.P. France, who is out for the season following shoulder surgery, to the 60-day injured list.
