“Active Dialogue” Underway Between Matt Chapman & Giants

Matt Chapman was another of those free agents last winter who was left hung out to dry by his agent Scott Boras's pressure tactics, only signing a deal far below market value after spring training had already begun.

The Gold Glove third baseman has had a nice season in San Francisco and is set to opt out of his $17 million option for 2025 and can become a free agent.

But according to a report from  Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said he and Chapman's camp have already had "conversations,” and “active dialogue” is ongoing on a long-term extension.

Chapman (read: Boras) reportedly turned down a six-year, $120 million offer last winter from his 2023 team, the Toronto Blue Jays, holding out for a hoped-for bigger payday. That, of course, never came, and he had to settle for a 3-year deal with opt-outs after each of the first two years with San Francisco that guaranteed him up to a maximum of $54 million.

The 31-year-old is a four-time Gold Glover, and a former All-Star who has regained much of his form this year back in The Bay Area (he played for Oakland for five seasons), launching 20 homers with 62 RBIs and 85 runs with the Giants, along with a 120 OPS+, his highest in four years. His 5.6 WAR is 8th highest in baseball.

Unlike another Boras client, who recently ripped the agent for bungling his free agency, Chapman has decided to stay with the controversial agent for these ongoing negotiations with the Giants.
