2 Teams Frontrunners for Impending Free Agent 3B Matt Chapman & Alex Bregman

Alex Bregman and Matt Chapman will be the two biggest third basemen on the free agent market this winter (when Chapman opts out of his deal).

In Bregman's case, he's been a staple with the Houston Astros for the past nine years with two Top 5 finishes in MVP balloting, although he's having a down year. For Chapman, he signed a 'prove it' short-term deal with opt-outs with the San Francisco Giants late this past offseason after his agent Scott Boras had him turn down a six-year, $120 million extension offer earlier from the Toronto Blue Jays.

If their current teams don’t re-sign these two third-sackers, it appears, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, that there are two teams who will lead the charge this winter to try to sign them.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The D-Backs have a club option for next year at $15 million on their current third baseman Eugenio Suarez, but it's highly doubtful they will exercise that, as the swing-and-miss machine is once again racking up the strikeout numbers and not living up to that contract. The Snakes will look to make a big improvement at the hot corner, and they'll have Bregman and Chapman on their radar.

Seattle Mariners

Suarez's old team, the Mariners, also need to address their third base spot, as they've been relying mostly on the underwhelming Josh Rojas there. The team currently ranks 23rd in the majors in HRs and OPS from their third basemen.

Although they've added a couple of nice pieces as the season has gone along in Randy Arozarena and even a rejuvenated Victor Robles, the M's know that offense still remains an area they must improve, if they are to give that tremendous pitching staff enough runs to work with going forward.

Rosenthal doesn't think there will be a huge stampede around the majors to sign Chapman and Bregman, but certainly, in addition to the incumbent Giants and Astros, Arizona and Seattle will be two serious candidates.
