TRADE: Red Sox & Blue Jays Complete Deal For Pending Free Agent

The Toronto Blue Jays fire sale is in full swing now, as they've already dealt two relievers, and now appear poised to pull off another trade, this time with the Boston Red Sox for catcher Danny Jansen.

In return, the Jays get a trio of minor leaguers: infielder Cutter Coffey, infielder Eddinson Paulino, & right-handed pitcher Gilberto Batista. Only Paulino has cracked the Red Sox top-30 prospects list.

Jansen will join a Red Sox team that is reconfiguring its pitching and catching corps at this deadline, as they also re-acquired stater James Paxton this week. The move allows them to shift Cooper Criswell to the bullpen.

As for Jansen, the 29-year-old right-handed hitting catcher has displayed a propensity for going on power binge runs at times in his career, and the Red Sox are hoping he's got one in him down the stretch. Over the 2022 and 2023 seasons, he had a 126 OPS+ in 158 games, with 32 home runs. He's batting just .212 this season with six homers in 61 games.

Jansen is also known for missing plenty of time due to injuries, so the BoSox hope that is not in the cards for the rest of this season.

He will be a free agent after the year is out.

He learned about the trade from a clubhouse TV after coming off the field on Saturday:
