Proposed Mets, Yankees Trade a “Perfect Fit”

Could the New York Mets and New York Yankees hook up for a rare 'Subway Trade'?

That's what's been proposed by infamous New York radio personality Mike Francesa on his podcast, as he suggested that the Mets have a player that they no longer want, that the Yankees could use.

To me, a perfect, perfect addition for the Yankees is [Jeff] McNeil. Number one, he is miserable with the Mets. The Mets can’t stand the look of him anymore, and he can’t stand the Mets anymore. He hasn’t been happy there in a long time. Let’s be honest, he doesn’t fit in, let’s be honest. They like [Jose] Iglesias more than they like him, we know that.

McNeil is having the worst year of his career thus far in Queens, batting just .214 (career .289) with a .271 on-base pct. (career .352), and an OPS of .578 (career .777). He's been overtaken at the strong side of the platoon at second base by Iglesias, who made his 4th straight start there Monday.

Francesa figures McNeil could platoon with the similarly struggling Gleyber Torres in the Bronx.

Although he's normally a second baseman, McNeil can also play the outfield and third base. And while 3B is now the sole possession of Mark Vientos for the Mets, McNeil is expected to pick up more time in the Mets' outfield. Unless Francesa has caught the ear of Yankees GM Brian Cashman, that is.

So what would the Yanks send back to the Mets? Francesa knows the answer to that, too: “The Yankees have a million guys in the high minors who could go into the Mets bullpen, they got them in droves. The Mets would probably take any one of [them].”

He does concede, though, that consummating a Mets/Yankees trade is never an easy thing. “It’s very hard for them to make a deal, because it’s just human nature when you play in the same town,” Francesa said.
