Orioles DFA Pitcher After Strong Minor League Numbers This Season

The Baltimore Orioles have designated right-hander Jonathan Heasley for assignment to make room for pitching prospect Chayce McDermott, whose contract was recently selected. 

Heasley, 27, was acquired from the Kansas City Royals in an offseason trade and has spent most of the current season in Triple-A. 

Despite a strong showing at Triple-A Norfolk with a 2.64 ERA over 30.2 innings, his major league performance this season was disappointing, allowing ten earned runs in 5.1 innings, resulting in a 16.88 ERA.

Heasley’s struggles in the majors have been compounded by a high .421 batting average on balls in play and a low 26.8% strand rate, indicating some degree of bad luck. 

His overall major league track record has been underwhelming, with a career 5.89 ERA in 139 innings since his debut in 2021. 

Additionally, Heasley has been dealing with right shoulder inflammation, landing him on Triple-A Norfolk's 7-day injured list for over a month. 

Orioles have made the following moves: Selected the contract of RHP Chayce McDermott from Triple-A Norfolk. He will wear No. 60 and start tonight’s game, his MLB debut. Optioned RHP Bryan Baker to Norfolk after yesterday’s game. DFA’d RHP Jonathan Heasley. 40-man is at 40.

With Heasley in his final option season and set to be out of options next year, the Orioles now have a week to trade him or pass him through waivers, potentially allowing another team to take a chance on his past prospect pedigree and minor league success. 

If he clears waivers, he could be outrighted to continue his recovery and attempt to regain his form in the minors.
