Oakland Athletics Place Two Players On Waivers
The Oakland Athletics have designated infielder Aledmys Díaz and left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb for assignment, marking a significant shift in the team's roster strategy.
Díaz, who signed a two-year, $14.5 million contract last year, was expected to provide veteran leadership and versatility.
However, his performance fell short of expectations. In 2023, Díaz batted just .229/.280/.337 with four home runs over 109 games.

This season, after returning from the injured list due to lower leg injuries, he managed only three singles in 30 plate appearances, striking out seven times and walking just once.
Sean Newcomb's season has been equally challenging.
The former notable Atlanta Braves pitching prospect started the year on the injured list following knee surgery.
Brett Harris is back with the A's. Aledmys Diaz has been DFAd. Good clubhouse presence but Diaz's at-bats will definitely be better used on young players moving forward.

Since returning, Newcomb struggled on the mound, posting a 6.30 ERA, a 1.70 WHIP, and a 7/8 K/BB ratio over 10 innings in seven appearances.
Despite showing promise last year, his recent performances have been inconsistent, prompting the Athletics to make the tough decision to designate him for assignment.
To fill the vacancies left by Díaz and Newcomb, the team has called up right-handed pitcher Tyler Ferguson and infielder Brett Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas.
