New York Mets Acquire 6-Year Veteran Southpaw Pitcher

The New York Mets bolstered their bullpen depth by claiming left-handed pitcher Alex Young off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.

Young, who has been assigned to Triple-A Syracuse, brings a blend of experience and versatility to the Mets' pitching staff.

In a corresponding move, the team designated lefty Tyler Jay for assignment.

Young, who made his Major League debut in 2019, appeared in three games for the Giants this season, allowing four hits and striking out two in four scoreless innings.

He had a solid 2023 season with a 3.86 ERA in 63 games, adding a reliable arm to the Giants' bullpen.

Originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Young transitioned from a starter to a full-time reliever.

The 30-year-old pitcher, who turns 31 in September, has a career record of 16-18 with a 4.40 ERA, 226 strikeouts, and 99 walks over 264 innings.

This low-cost acquisition adds much-needed veteran presence and another left-handed option to the Mets' bullpen, which has struggled recently.

With a bullpen ERA of 7.17 since June 23, the Mets are looking for stability as they maintain a 49-46 record, holding a one-game lead over the Diamondbacks for the final National League Wild Card spot.
