MLB Trade Rumors: Colorado Rockies In Talks to Trade Former All-Star MVP

After an All-Star season in 2023, Colorado Rockies catcher Elias Diaz has been a hot commodity in trade talks around baseball this month as we get closer to the deadline on July 30.

According to the latest from insider Jon Heyman, Diaz is one of the most likely trade candidates this season to actually get moved, putting the odds at 83%.

Heyman reports that the team has declined to engage in extension talks with the 33-year-old catcher, whose 3-year, $14.5 million contract expires at the end of the season.

In 2023, Diaz was selected as the Rockies representative at the MidSummer Classic, as he held a first-half average of .277 with a .763 OPS and 45 RBIs. He even took home MVP honors in the ggame.

Diaz dipped somewhat in the second half and finished the season with a .267 average, 14 HRs and 72 RBIs.

This season is another strong year for Diaz, though, batting .296 to this point with a .340 on-base and a .756 OPS, though his power numbers have dropped off to just 5 homers and 30 RBIs.

And while the Rockies often hang on to their tradeable assets unnecessarily, and fail to deal them at the deadline, the case with Diaz seems to be different this year.

This is his 5th season in Denver over the course of a 10-year major league career.
