MLB Trade Rumors: Closer Tanner Scott Would Head to Padres in Proposed Deal

Hot off a no-hitter thrown by red-hot starter Dylan Cease on Thursday night, could the San Diego Padres go out and land another rock-solid stopper for the bullpen?

According to former major league GM Jim Bowden, writing in The Athletic, the Friars could go out and secure their bullpen heading down the stretch by offering the Miami Marlins a 20-year-old lefty "with huge upside." His proposed deal would be a one-for-one straight up:

San Diego Padres Receive:

RP Tanner Scott

Miami Marlins Receive:

LHP Robby Snelling

The Padres already have All-Star Robert Suarez, a righty, at the back end of their bullpen, as the closer has racked up 23 saves with a 1.58 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP. Now imagine if they could add the left-hander Scott to work in combination with Suarez — the Marlins' current closer has 18 saves with a ridiculous 1.21 ERA with 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

The Padres, 55-50, currently hold down the 3rd and final Wild Card spot in the NL, but it's extremely close, with six teams separated by only 2.5 games for the three WC spots.

As for Snelling, he was the 39th overall pick in the 2022 draft, and though he has had control issues this season at Double A, Bowden says "his stuff is compelling and screams out that he’ll eventually develop into a solid starter."
