MLB Trade Rumors: Braves Linked To Big-Name Starter

The Atlanta Braves have emerged as serious contenders for Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet, as they seek to strengthen their pitching rotation before the trade deadline. 

With key starters Max Fried on the injured list due to left forearm neuritis and Spencer Strider out for the season following elbow surgery, the Braves' need for a top-tier starter has intensified. 

Crochet, who has seamlessly transitioned from the bullpen to the starting rotation, is having an outstanding season, leading the American League with 160 strikeouts and boasting a 2.41 FIP through 22 appearances. His minimal salary of $800K and two additional years of team control make him an attractive target for Atlanta.

Braves are among teams considering White Sox ace Garrett Crochet. Makes sense for them if they can muster decent return. They have multiple injury losses/concerns at the top of their rotation and Crochet salary ($800K) is very reasonable.

However, acquiring Crochet is not without complications. 

According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, Crochet is seeking an extension if he is to pitch in the playoffs and prefers to remain a starter rather than return to a relief role. 

This demand adds a layer of complexity to any potential trade, as it mirrors the strategy used by Josh Hader with the San Diego Padres last season. While some teams, like the Los Angeles Dodgers, might not see the extension requirement as a barrier, others, including the Braves, may have reservations.

Nevertheless, the Braves' general manager Alex Anthopoulos is known for his ability to secure high-impact trades, suggesting that if he believes Crochet is the key to bolstering their rotation, he might find a way to get the deal done.

Adding Crochet to a playoff rotation featuring Fried, Chris Sale, and Reynaldo López would significantly enhance Atlanta’s postseason prospects. 

Despite the potential complications, the Braves recognize the immense value Crochet could bring. The trade market for Crochet is competitive, with the Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Diego Padres also showing interest.
