MLB Trade Rumors: 3 New Teams Linked to Garrett Crochet in Turn of Events

With Garrett Crochet having looked like the top starting pitching target of a number of contenders at this coming week's trade deadline (in particular, the Los Angeles Dodgers), we now have a turn of event unfolding, as, according to insider Ken Rosenthal, in The Athletic, it appears that the Chicago White Sox are likely NOT going to trade him by July 30th.
Some in the industry expect the Chicago White Sox to hold left-hander Garrett Crochet, believing that an even greater number of buyers will emerge in the offseason and that his value is greater in his additional two years of club control than in 2024.

The big sticking point with Crochet is his innings. He's already pitched 111 innings this season, after having thrown only 24 innings total between the majors and minors last season. It's also more than double the amount he's ever thrown as a pro in the past. His ability to be able to offer full starter's innings AND pitch in the playoffs for any acquiring team is questionable.

It's noted that after a full year of getting accustomed to a full starter's role, he would have much more value to teams going forward. And the Pale Hose do intend to keep him in the rotation the rest of the season.

Rosenthal names three teams that could be potential buyers in the offseason, all of them out of it now, but intending to "contend" in 2025:

  • Toronto Blue Jays
  • Chicago Cubs
  • Washington Nationals

As for Crochet, he doesn't seem to be affected by the innings he's thrown, as he's gotten stronger of late, posting a 1.87 ERA in his last 15 starts, with a 0.89 WHIP, and an incredible 117:17 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Of course, this latest rumor about Chicago wanting to hold on to Crochet could very well be a negotiating ploy, and contending teams won't stop trying to get the ChiSox to give in this coming week, and will continue to offer enticing packages.
