Mariners Place Pitcher On Waivers After Impressive 2023 Season
The Seattle Mariners have designated right-hander Mike Baumann for assignment, a surprising decision considering his impressive performance during the 2023 season.
Baumann, who was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in May in exchange for Triple-A catcher Blake Hunt, had showcased his potential as a reliable middle reliever with a solid 3.76 ERA over 64.2 innings for the Orioles.
Despite his initial success, Baumann struggled to replicate those results with the Mariners, recording a 5.51 ERA over 16.1 innings in 18 outings.

Baumann's time with the Mariners was marked by inconsistency. While he maintained a fastball velocity exceeding 96 MPH, his overall performance with Seattle showed a decline.
He allowed 11 runs, struck out 16 batters, and walked eight, while also surrendering four home runs.
His combined 2024 season stats, including a 4.41 ERA over 34.2 innings between the Orioles and Mariners, reflected a drop from his previous year's form.
His 20.8% strikeout percentage, 11% walk rate, and 1.56 home runs per nine innings were all below league average, leading to the Mariners' tough decision.

The Mariners' decision to designate Baumann for assignment comes as they reinstate left-hander Gabe Speier from the 15-day injured list.
Speier, who had been sidelined with a left rotator cuff strain, will look to bolster Seattle’s bullpen. Meanwhile, Baumann's future remains uncertain as the Mariners have five days to trade him.
