Los Angeles Angels Release Former All-Star Slugger

The Los Angeles Angels have decided to release former All-Star slugger Miguel Sanó, marking the end of his brief tenure with the team.

This move comes a week after the Angels designated Sanó for assignment, unable to find a trade partner for the struggling infielder.

Sanó, who signed a minor league contract with the Angels for the 2024 season, initially performed well enough to make the team out of spring training, but his performance quickly declined.

Sanó, who began his major league career with the Minnesota Twins in 2015, quickly showcased his power by hitting 18 home runs in 80 games, earning a third-place finish in the AL Rookie of the Year voting.

His peak came in 2017 when he made his sole All-Star appearance, hitting .264 with 28 home runs.

Despite his early promise and impressive power, Sanó's career has been plagued by injuries and a high strikeout rate.

Over his career, he has a .233/.325/.477 batting line and a 36.5% strikeout rate. His struggles continued with the Angels this season, as he batted just .205 with two home runs and 36 strikeouts in 28 games.

Sanó's season took a downturn when he was placed on the injured list on May 1 due to left knee inflammation. After returning to active duty on June 25, he managed only one hit—a home run—in 22 at-bats and struck out nine times.

The return of Anthony Rendon from the injured list further limited Sanó's opportunities, leading to the Angels' decision to designate him for assignment.

Despite his immense raw power, Sanó will now need to prove himself with a minor league deal and a strong Triple-A showing to earn another shot in the majors.
