All-"Still" Free Agent Team: Top Remaining Player At Each Position
We're well into Spring Training now, exhibition games are underway, and yet there are still plenty of free agents out there. Let's have a look at the All-Free Agent team, one player at each position, still without a job, and the list includes a former MVP and Cy Young winner among the lot:
- C: Mike Zunino, age 33
- 1B: Joey Votto, (age 40)
- 2B: Jonathan Schoop, age 32
- SS: Adalberto Mondesi, age 28
- 3B: Matt Chapman, age 38
- LF: Tommy Pham, age 36
- CF: Michael A. Taylor, age 33
- RF: Wil Myers, age 33
- DH: JD Martinez, age 36
- SP1: Blake Snell, age 31
- SP2: Jordan Montgomery, age 31
- SP3: Michael Lorenzen, age 32
- SP4: Mike Clevinger, age 33
- SP5: Zack Greinke, age 40
- RP: Brad Hand, age 34
Another starting pitcher, Julio Urias, would have been one of the top names on this year's free agent class, but his second domestic violence incident in four years ended his time with the LA Dodgers, and completely clouds his MLB future for the time being. He's a free agent, but we've excluded him from this list.
Aside from the Boras Four (Chapman, Snell, Montgomery, and Martinez), who have been holding out with demands that teams are so far unwilling to meet, there doesn't seem to be a lot of demand for the others.
Each of the others have big red flags, from age, to massive injury concerns, to just poor performance in recent years.
Still nearly a month, however, before Opening Day for the majority of teams, so we still expect many of these to sign on somewhere at some point.
