Top 10 Remaining Free Agents in MLB
Now that the calendar has flipped, teams will start to get more serious about completing their rosters heading into spring training next month, and with that, negotiations are starting to pick up for the top remaining free agents.
We take a look now at the top 10 players still on the market:
- Cody Bellinger
- Blake Snell
- Josh Hader
- Jordan Montgomery
- Matt Chapman
- Marcus Stroman
- Teoscar Hernandez
- Jorge Soler
- Rhys Hoskins
- JD Martinez
The Bellinger sweepstakes is looking like it’s coming down to the incumbent Chicago Cubs and, less likely every day, the Toronto Blue Jays. The top remaining starting pitcher on the list, Snell, is being heavily recruited by the San Francisco Giants, while the top reliever still available, Hader, is looking for the largest contract ever by a reliever, to top Edwin Diaz’s contract of $102 million with the New York Mets. His top suitors are the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees.
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery is another name being linked to the Yankees as they are quite familiar with him from earlier in his career. And it appears that the Cubs and the Jays, in addition to their chase for Bellinger, will also be battling it out for third baseman Matt Chapman, who spent the last two seasons with Toronto.
If either of Toronto or Chicago miss out on Bellinger and Chapman, they are likely to look at some of those names closer to the bottom of that top 10 list in order to add a power bat, names like Hoskins, Soler, Hernandez, or Martinez.
Honorable mention outside the top 10 of available free agents goes to Japanese left-hander Shota Imanaga (who should get a massive contract), DH Justin Turner. reliever Jordan Hicks, and outfielder Harrison Bader.
