Mariners Have Eye On “A Banger Who Just Goes Out And Bangs”
To say that Seattle Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry DiPoto is looking for some offense this offseason is clearly an understatement. Coming out of the GM meetings, DiPoto dropped this nugget about the sort of player they're looking to add:
We'd love to have a full-time DH, a banger who just goes out and bangs.
There are certainly a number of players on the free agent market who fill that description this winter... Some more than others. Here's a look at 5 top targets for the M's to add some BANG to their DH spot.
Shohei Ohtani
Clearly the cream of the crop, Ohtani is in line for his second MVP award after banging 44 home runs with a major league-leading 1.066 OPS.
JD Martinez
The former Boston Red Sox slugger had a late-career renaissance with the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, returning to the 30-HR, 100-RBI clubs for the first time in four years.
Jorge Soler
He also had his best year since 2019, banging 36 longballs for the Miami Marlins.
Mitch Garver
The former catcher turned mostly DH had a consistently productive year in Texas, slashing .270/.370/.500 with 11 doubles, 19 home runs and 50 RBIs in 344 plate appearances.
Justin Turner
Another solid, older veteran who had a very good year, with 23 home runs and 96 RBIs for the Red Sox.
