Oakland Athletics Claim Former 1st-Round Pick Pitcher Off Waivers

The Oakland Athletics recently acquired left-handed pitcher Anthony Kay through waivers from the New York Mets.

This move follows a series of team changes for the 28-year-old former top prospect.

Despite facing challenges during the 2023 season, where he posted a 6.60 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, and had an 11/9 K/BB ratio over 15 innings while playing for both the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, Kay now has the opportunity to compete for a regular spot in the Athletics' bullpen in the upcoming season.

Kay's journey in the MLB has seen him move from the Mets to the Toronto Blue Jays in the Marcus Stroman trade, then to the Chicago Cubs on waivers last offseason, and eventually back to the Mets.

While his performance at the major league level has been inconsistent, his Triple-A numbers this year showed promise, with a 3.76 ERA and an impressive strikeout rate.

Over his five-year MLB career, Kay holds a 5.67 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, with 88 strikeouts across 85.2 innings and 45 appearances. Photo Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports
