Cleveland Guardians Rumors: 2 Teams Have Talented Shortstop On Their Radar
The Cleveland Guardians are facing a financial challenge when it comes to retaining Amed Rosario, their current shortstop.
As Rosario approaches free agency at the end of 2023, his final year of arbitration will see him earn $7.8 million—a significant figure for a team with a payroll of around $60 million in the previous season. In addition, the team's No. 6 prospect, Brayan Rocchio, could be ready for a major league role soon.
This financial constraint makes Rosario a trade candidate for the Guardians and two teams are interested:
New York Yankees
The Yankees have young prospect Anthony Volpe as their current starting shortstop. With a batting average of .205 thus far, it may be beneficial for Volpe to have more time to refine his skills before assuming the everyday shortstop role for the Yankees. Additionally, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who currently fills the shortstop position for the Yankees, may not be the ideal long-term solution. Adding Rosario would be huge to filling a significant need for the team.
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks have Geraldo Perdomo and Nick Ahmed as their current shortstops. Perdomo has had a scorching start to the season, boasting a .373 batting average over 28 games. However, it's likely that Perdomo's hot streak might cool off in the near future. Ahmed, on the other hand, has had a mediocre start to the season. If the Diamondbacks are serious about contending this season and beyond, adding a shortstop like Amed Rosario would significantly bolster their chances of success.
