Arizona Diamondbacks Recall Promising Outfielder

A recent run of eight games in Triple-A has re-established the major league potential of one-time top Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Jake McCarthy. Sent down a month ago after a brutal start to the season, McCarthy has been tearing it up in the minors, and is now returning to The Show.

He'll replace Dominic Fletcher, who has been sent down after plenty of struggles since his recent call-up.

McCarthy's play in the outfield last season was one of the reasons the Snakes felt comfortable trading Daulton Varsho to the Toronto Blue Jays in an offseason deal that landed them top young catcher Gabriel Moreno and hot-hitting outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. But McCarthy struggled to start the 2023 season, hitting just .143 with a .467 OPS in 22 games. His OPS+ of 30 was 70% worse than a league-average hitter.

Then came his stint at Reno in Triple-A. All he did in his last eight games there was bat .460 with two doubles and two homers. Overall, in 22 games in the PCL, he hit .333 with a .952 OPS, four steals, four homers and 17 RBIs.

He says his mental toughness helped him maintain his confidence on his trip down to the minors.
